Artist Statement
My work is a study in the reverse. The two mediums of printmaking and batik reflect this. Removing matter from plates, or adding negative space with the use of wax are both appealing to me. I wander between the control of printmaking and the random, free flowing aspect of hot wax and dyes. Inspiration is based upon the environment, endangered species, and recently, architecture. Using an ancient art form for contemporary images is an appealing aspect. I feel a deep connection to the places where I grew up, and convey those thoughts and feelings in my current work. Returning to places in Detroit from an earlier time, buildings that are no longer used or have been destroyed are rediscovered. Additionally, continued studies of nature offers further exploration in flora and fauna. Kate Ford
