About

Danielle Whitehead is a Detroit-based visual artist who works mainly in painting and drawing. Her art explores Black folklore and seeks to draw connections among oral stories, portraiture, and ancestral history. Central to her practice is research, particularly in culturally meaningful themes rooted in blackness. She regards her art as a bridge between past and present, honoring the complexities of human experience. Renee is inspired by Black folktales, the writing of Toni Morrison, Octavia E. Butler, Virginia Hamilton, and Zora Neal Hurston, fantasy literature, nature, and memories of her parents' garden.
Her work has appeared in publications such as Goddessarts Magazine and Moonlight Getaway. In 2024, she was an artist-in-residence at Fernland Studios. Renee holds a BFA from Michigan State University.

Artist Statement

My artistic practice is rooted in storytelling—of the people, for the people, and by the people. Inspired by the folklore shared with me as a child and my love of literature, I view my work as a cultural repository that bridges the past and the present, honoring the complexities of the human experience. I aim to preserve memories and amplify underrepresented voices, focusing on African American heritage, marginalized narratives, and environmental themes.

Research is central to my process, especially when exploring culturally significant stories or themes beyond my personal experience. Whether studying African American folklore, reflecting on individual memories, or drawing from meaningful conversations, I strive to connect personal and collective experiences. My work draws inspiration from the writings of Octavia E. Butler, Toni Morrison, and Zora Neale Hurston, fantasy literature, the natural world, and my childhood in my parents’ garden. This rich foundation allows me to craft nuanced narratives celebrating human and cultural histories.

Through figure painting, portraiture, intricate patterns, motifs, and my writings, I create works that invite empathy and reflection. Each piece is a deliberate act of preservation and celebration designed to highlight marginalized communities and cultivate spaces where individuals feel seen and valued. My exploration of environmental themes further extends this ethos, connecting our responsibility to care for the planet with the care we owe to one another.

Through my art, I aim to provoke dialogue, nurture empathy, and elevate unheard voices. Each story I share is not merely a narrative but an invitation for connection—a bridge between diverse experiences and our shared humanity.
