The Detroit Artists Market is pleased to present Abstraction and Landscape: Contemporary Woodcut, a group exhibition of six international, national and local printmakers. Curated by Endi Poskovic, Professor of Art and Design at University of Michigan, Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design, this dynamic season-opening exhibition seeks to reveal the 19th-century Romantic landscape tradition of Northern Europe as the origin of modern abstraction, a premise set forth in the 1970s essays by renowned American art historian and professor, Robert Rosenblum (1927-2006). The artists in this exhibition explore themes of memory, the sublime, deity, transformation, revival, intimations of mortality, as well as ideas about nationality, displacement, and reconciliation. The exhibition includes groupings of large prints, individual prints, artists’ books, as well as a three-dimensional work suspended from above. DAM will host a public reception on Friday, September 12 from 6-9 p.m. and a public meet-and-greet reception with the curator and artists on Thursday, September 25 from 6 - 9 p.m. Abstraction and Landscape: Contemporary Woodcut coincides with Print City: Detroit 2014 (Sept. 24-27), the biennial conference of the Mid-America Print Council, held this year on the Wayne State University campus.
In conjunction with the conference and as a complement to the Abstraction exhibition, DAM will also feature curator Erik Brunvand’s portfolio show, Homespun Technology, a display of 23 small prints from artists across the country.

DAM assembled a curatorial team to bring their varied perspectives to consider ceramics from different angles. This curatorial team includes Tim Mast, an avid collector with an insightful eye; Tom Phardel, an accomplished ceramic artist and instructor; and Linda Ross, an experienced art dealer and consultant. FIREPOWER Ceramics 2013 features a large array of work by some of Michigan’s most talented ceramicists. It will include one-of-a-kind sculptural pieces highlighting the myriad directions an artist can take this medium. This is a show not to be missed by collectors! Additionally, DAM will offer an engaging selection of decorative and functional ceramic works for purchase. Do not miss this opportunity to experience FIREPOWER Ceramics 2013 at the Detroit Artists Market.
“This exhibition draws attention to a diverse group of ceramic sculptors. Their works attest to the possibilities contained within a medium that remains open to further innovation. They work in a variety of styles and approaches, but they have in common the goal of transforming clay matter into fresh, visually powerful objects imbued with meaning.” –Linda Ross
