Announcing New Call for Entries at DAM - Abstraction Exhibition with Guest Juror, Lester Johnson

The Detroit Artists Market is pleased to announce the open Call for Entries for our Abstraction themed exhibition, juried by Lester Johnson.  CLICK HERE FOR CALL FOR ENTRY FORM

Abstraction, sprouting from seeds such as Whistler’s “Falling Rocket” and germinating in the early years of the twentieth century, finds its first formal expression in Cubism and Russian Constructivism. It quickly evolved into many directions; Futurism, Fauvism, German Expressionism, the Bauhaus School, abstract and lyrical expressionism, Minimalism, Color Field painting, Op art and so on. Forms became bombastic and emotive, structured and disciplined, minimal and meditative. In an age when contemporary society bombards us with a multitude of images daily, often drawing from us quick impulse responses, abstraction takes a different course. The intent of the visual output is not often readily apparent and the viewer is required to use intellect and reasoning; having to draw from their own experience to make a connection with the artwork. Thus we seek out the artists who forego the popular formats, push boundaries and find their strength in this movement.

There are no size constraints and all mediums are encouraged, including both 2D and 3D; painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, installation and performance. Also including time -based work such as audio, video and other genres not listed.

Juror - Lester Johnson

The Detroit Artists Market is honored to have Lester Johnson as the Abstraction guest juror. A native Detroiter, he received both his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Johnson recently retired after thirty-five years as a professor of Fine Arts at the College of Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan. During his long and productive career as a renowned fine artist, Johnson exhibited his work in the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York as well as numerous galleries both national and international. In September of 2011, Lester Johnson was invited to sign the historic Scarab Club beams, an honor only extended to artists whom have made significant and lasting contributions to the arts.
