Artist Statement
I began my painting career when I was 10, when I inherited an old varnished box of oil paints from my grandfather. My first work was a loosely realistic painting of a duck, which still hangs proudly in my mom’s house. Throughout the years I’ve explored various artistic mediums but oil painting kept luring me in. From a young age growing up on a farm in Michigan, I’ve been innately and deeply drawn to animals and the out-of-doors. After years of having my art secondary to teaching, in 2010 I finally listened to my deep inner call and began painting full time. Naturally, I paint subjects that are most familiar to me and close to my heart; animals and the landscapes surrounding me. With a background in photography, I am inspired by natural light. Working from photographs and plein-air studies, my unique painting style creates texture while capturing the character of each animal caught in a moment in time or the beauty of nature.
