Artist Statement
Phillips’ works are peculiar artifacts existing through a playful sentiment that objects, places, and creatures possess a distinct spiritual essence. Concepts are addressed through layered comparisons of material and objecthood. Living in Alaska and throughout the Pacific Northwest afforded him the opportunity to observe natural processes and explore the relationships that highlight the tensions, struggles, and interplay between contrary tendencies in our world. Mathematics, physics, celestial mechanics, psychology, philosophy, and sociology are all common themes within his works. Each is interwoven to create a mesh of consciousness which implores the viewer to transition between their inner and outer selves.
