Miranda Kyle is a watercolor painter and muralist who often centers people of color in her work. She earned her BFA in Illustration with a minor in Art History from the College for Creative Studies in 2021 and later completed her certification in Art Education. In 2023, she received a Kresge Artist Fellowship for her contributions to the visual arts in Detroit.
Her practice explores memory, identity, and storytelling through personal experiences and those around her. Kyle sees each artwork as both an individual narrative and part of a larger, evolving story. Her paintings connect like fragments of memory or puzzle pieces, embracing layered meaning and shifting perspectives while inviting viewers to find parts of themselves within her stories.
"My process changed from graphite drawings to watercolor installations. After overworking a watercolor painting, my professor encouraged me to cut out its redeeming elements. What began as a failed painting became a new way of creating. I began ripping apart my paintings and collaging each piece together like a puzzle.
My work reflects my belief that “We are who we are, because of where we’ve been,” while drawing from childhood memories of rearranging magnets in my family’s kitchen.”
