COMING SOON!
For the first time in its history, the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) will bring its 60th annual conference, Volumes, to Detroit from March 25–28, 2026. As part of this milestone event, the Detroit Artists Market (DAM) is hosting exhibition Thresholds: Ceramic Furniture as one of the conference’s Featured Exhibitions.
Thresholds: Ceramic Furniture is a design-centered exhibition exploring ceramic furniture as a point of connection between the body and the spaces we occupy. The works consider how furniture prompts us to move, gather, rest, and experience a room. In alignment with NCECA’s mission to support innovation in the field, the exhibition showcases thirteen artists who use ceramics in inventive, unexpected ways—blending art, craft, and design.
Influenced by styles ranging from the organic curves of Art Nouveau to the clean geometry of Mid-century design, the exhibition highlights how historical forms continue to shape contemporary practice. Each piece invites viewers to imagine sitting with, leaning against, or living alongside these works, even if only in thought. Together, they present ceramic furniture not solely as functional objects, but as expressive forms that shape spatial and emotional experience.
