SUPPORTING ARTISTS AS ENTREPRENEURS

DAM’s Creative Entrepreneurship Initiative (CEI) provides workshops, training, and public programs designed to help visual artists build sustainable creative careers by strengthening the business and professional side of their practice.

KEY PROGRAMS

Artists develop their practices in many different ways, yet often face similar barriers—what’s next, how to price work, how to build visibility, and where to begin. DAM’s programs are designed to meet these needs through various program structures, offering community and insights, and providing clear, accessible guidance. Rooted in community and real-world experience, these programs have supported hundreds of artists in reaching their goals and sustaining creative careers.

NETWORKING NIGHTS

Networking Nights offer informal opportunities for artists, collectors, and community members to connect, build relationships, and explore collaborative opportunities.

WHY IT MATTERS

Artists are essential contributors to Detroit’s cultural and economic life, yet many lack access to the same infrastructure available to other entrepreneurs. According to the City of Detroit’s Creative Worker Census, nearly half of Metro Detroit artists earn less than $20,000 annually from their creative work. This gap is not a reflection of talent, but of access to resources, training, and networks. CEI responds directly to the challenges artists face in sustaining their practice, offering structured support that connects artistic production to long-term economic opportunity.

The Creative Entrepreneurship Initiative addresses this disparity by recognizing artists as entrepreneurs and providing them with the tools to operate sustainable businesses. By strengthening artists’ financial stability and professional capacity, CEI supports not only individual livelihoods, but the long-term health of Detroit’s creative sector.
