Artist Statement
QUAINT, a guerrilla-style street artist based on Detroit's east side,
combines sustainable design with minimalist aesthetics to create a bold,
fresh design style. In addition to his artistic practice, Quaint owns a
neighborhood-based art space based in a former bank, Finite Studios,
with his dancer wife Maya Stovall. Finite Studios is focused on
transformation through creativity, with dance, street art, and community
gardening programs. Quaint studied engineering at Lawrence
Technological University, constructing geometric shapes and patterns
with a minimalist design style. The 2012 Wayne Prize winner for
Community Art, Quaint also builds cars at General Motors, and uses
principles of electrical engineering, hip hop culture, and functional
design in his current art works.
QUAINT has works on view currently on Detroit's east side in his
community garden and art environment; on Main Street in the City of
Royal Oak; at the Heidelberg Project's Offices, and has exhibited works at
Movement Festival, DLECTRICITY, Free City, Liberal Arts Gallery, Tangent Gallery, and Detroit Design Festival, amongst others. Quaint is also known for his functional design work, constructing bus benches and trash bins from reclaimed materials throughout McDougall-Hunt. He was recently interviewed by the Detroit News for his vigilante design work providing seating to people
waiting hours for Detroit buses to arrive.
QUAINT is also co-founder of the renowned underground electronic
music x art space, Finite Gallery, and he makes ambient electronic music
and performs as part of the music x dance art project, Flower Cabin, when
he's not sculpting. Quaint has served as a guest electronic music artist with Allied Media Projects' Detroit Future Schools and is currently building Finite Studios' Street Art Workshops (SAW) Program to fight blight with art and
uplift spirits on city street corners.
