About
Boisali Biswas was born and raised in India. She received her BFA from Visva-Bharati University, specializing in fiber art. She completed an MFA from Bowling Green State University, OH and has lived in the U.S. for over 30 years. As an immigrant fiber artist, her work is an effortless amalgamation Indian and Western art traditions. She is committed to minimize waste and use discarded materials while exploring the many facets of the medium.
Boisali resides in West Bloomfield, MI and has shown extensively all over Midwest and Eastern US in solo, juried and invitational shows. Last year, she was invited for a solo show in her hometown, Kolkata, India. In past few years, she has been juried into World of Threads festival in Toronto, Canada and Fiberart International, PA. She has taught several workshops in relation to her exhibits and is often invited by fiber guilds around the country, to present her work over zoom. She has been a featured artist in Textile Fibre Forum Magazine from Australia.
Artist Statement
I was fortunate to spend 5 formative years for my BFA at Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, founded by Rabindranath Tagore. The school’s visions of love for nature, freedom of heart and mind, critical thinking, and enrichment of culture through Art, became part of me. This holistic approach to the way of life greatly shaped my artistic personality forever.
As an immigrant fiber artist from India, my work is constantly informed by my existence between two cultures, woven by threads of transcending memories, nostalgia and cultural identity. Most often I find myself drawn to my roots, exploring the complexity of migration and belonging. I contemplate on how cultures around the world are bound together by the warp and weft of civilization, how we are wrapped in cloth from our inception.
Over the years, my creative trajectory evolved manyfold as I have moved from one concept to another, often finding unexpected connections and overlaps.
