I draw and paint from both observation and imagination, often prompted by an object, creature, plant, or scene that visually grabs me or conveys a certain meaning to me.
About
I have been drawing and painting since childhood when I was obsessed with drawing animals. Since then my subject matter has broadened to people, landscapes, plants and other natural and abstracted forms - whatever catches my eye and resonates with a certain meaning for me.
Artist Statement
I work from both observation and imagination with drawing at the center of my practice. Painting mediums used are watercolor, acrylic, and oils. My approach can vary from detailed and realistic to abstract depending on the aims of the piece. Favorite subjects include people, plants, animals, and landscapes. The aim of my work is not always the subject as it conventionally appears in its usual surroundings. Working in the confines of two-dimensions and playing with the illusions that can be created when a flat surface is activated through line, shadow, and color is what excites me. I’m driven to do my artwork to explore what is visually resonant and meaningful to me and to communicate some form of these fascinations to others through drawing or painting.
