I am a painter who doesn’t paint, an educator without a current classroom and a “fourth quarter” newly-married woman embarking on one more new chapter in a life that has been filled with many pages.
When I was in college, I was lucky enough to work with Professor Robert Knipschild , an artist and educator, who was a member of one of the first US delegations to visit China when cultural exchanges resumed in the early 1970’s. His talk of Asian art and culture reawakened in me the love of ink and line that is at the root of my work.

Artist Statement

My art begins with LOOKING at our world and responding with LINE - the most immediate and malleable tool of expression since it is born of a simple human gesture. When drawing real things, I seek to see the metaphors and feel the emotions that push me to connect beyond superficial recording.
And, these LINES often have another life after their first creation – a chance to spread their wings and become something else. Not all drawings deserve the right to be ART, but within those drawings may be lines that are worthy of that distinction: wrong place and time is all. These lines, applied like paint with a brush, become the core of my PAPER PAINTINGS.
The color comes, not from paint, but rather from the layering of colored papers. Almost all peoples of the world make “paper” and that paper reflects their culture- different fibers, different dyes, different processes, different uses. Since paper reflects cultural origins, how and what they - and we - combine is enlightening, almost like how combining the cultures of the world can create new art and new ideas. Layers create depth.
I must admit I like chaos, well… certainly complexity. Within that complexity I seek moments of elemental simplicity and shared experience. Most importantly, I have things to say with my art, and I hope the viewer has an experience that connects us.
