As an artist, I am most interested in the process and the intrinsic qualities of the medium in which I am working. The qualities of the surface, the mark, and the relationships of color... the idea that one mark or stroke demands the next; combine to involve me as an artist in the creative process.

About
Christine Ritchie is an accomplished painter with a rich background, including a BFA and MFA from Pratt Institute, extensive international plein air studies, and decades of teaching and curatorial experience. Her expressive alla prima technique—applied to both vibrant figurative works and luminous landscapes—captures the immediacy of the moment, focusing on gesture, movement, and the intrinsic qualities of paint and surface. Through her art, she evokes a deep sense of shared humanity, inviting viewers to experience the rhythm, physicality, and emotional resonance of being present in both figure and nature.
Originally from Michigan, Ritchie lived in NYC for 23 years and currently resides in the Detroit area. Ritchie's work has been exhibited in NYC, Chicago, Memphis, Detroit, Italy and the Netherlands .
Artist Statement
I am interested in the figure as a vehicle in transit through space and look for
rhythms created by the human form as it moves through and beyond or into the
picture plane. I am ultimately searching for a “language” to communicate the
physicality of the figure which is felt as much as seen by the viewer.
Most works are painted alla prima from a live model.
Having taken up the practice of plein air painting, I have tried, when painting Landscapes, whether on location or in the studio, my approach is the same...reactionary to the view in front of me and always alla Prima
Painting in the open air allows me to become one with the landscape and truly dissolve into it.
