September 22 – October 21, 2023

Ordinarily, writing shares ideas by translating them into arrangements of symbols that can be understood by applying the rules of a language. The artists in this show transcend the usual ways writing communicates by creating new writing systems, reinterpreting ancient forms of written communication, or using written signs in nonlinguistic ways to express meaning in situations where ordinary languages will not suffice.

Participating Artists:

Jide Aje, Nina Ashraf Asmi, Lynne Avadenka, Yoriko Cronin, Eric Fogle, Espacia Fotiu, Jennifer Gariepy, Janet Hamrick

Featured Artist: Sarah Blanchette, curated by Anita Bates

Learn Basic Calligraphy strokes with “In Other Words” artist Jennifer Gariepy
Calligraphy is a fine art that can be put to practical use every day. In this workshop, we will learn to write our name in two scripts: Uncial, a European book hand used in such masterpieces as the ninth-century Book of Kells, and Adult Cursive, a style of handwriting for daily use that dates from the late 1970s. First we will learn how to hold a writing instrument for the greatest comfort, control, and freedom of movement, including the different ways left-handed and right-handed writers need to angle their pen nibs and paper. Then we will study models of the two scripts and learn the correct way to form each of the characters in our name.
