
This review is intentionally low-stakes and high-support – designed to help students practice presenting their portfolios in a pressure-free setting. It offers a valuable introduction to the kinds of critiques they may encounter in college, exhibitions, or professional life – while building their confidence, communication skills, and creative voice.
Whether exploring fine art, design, or other creative paths, students will leave with new insights, clearer direction, and a deeper sense of connection to Detroit’s artist community. It’s a game-changing afternoon rooted in mentorship, growth, and the celebration of Detroit’s next generation of talent.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
There will be five individual review stations, each run by an artist, art educator, or industry professional. Students will have the opportunity to present and engage with two different reviewers. Each review is capped at 10 minutes, in order to give adequate time to each student.
PORTFOLIO REVIEW GUIDLINES
To ensure a successful and productive experience, please review the following guidelines before attending DAM’s portfolio review session.
What to Bring: Please bring a strong selection of 5-7 pieces that represent your artistic work and vision. The following formats are welcome:
- Printed /Digital Portfolio: e.g. tablets, laptops, or prints/printed booklet, etc.
- Original Artwork: Original artwork should only be brought in if it is easily transported and conducive to the review process.
Works in progress are welcome if that is something you want to present/discuss.
Additional Materials:
- Artist Statement: ½ to 1 page (max) that includes your name, a short bio, and a brief description of your work, including your inspirations and how you create it.
- Notebook and Pen: For taking notes during your session.
Optional
- Resume/CV: Include exhibitions, education, residencies, or awards if applicable.
- Business Cards: Helpful for networking and follow-up.
What Not to Bring
- Bulky or delicate artwork: Do not bring in artwork that is difficult to transport or could get damaged.
- Oversized or unwieldy materials: Keep things portable and organized.
- Unrelated work: Keep your presentation focused on your current artistic direction.
Content Tips
- Cohesion Matters: Present a body of work that reflects your style and direction.
- Highlight Your Voice: Make sure your personality and creative vision come through in both visuals and written content.
During the Review
- Be Open to Feedback: This is a space for growth! Constructive critique is part of the process.
- Engage in Dialogue: Ask questions and share insights about your work.
- Time Management: Feedback sessions are limited to 10 minutes per review. Be concise and focused.
