Deb King’s artistic journey began in the 1970s with dance and evolved into co-founding Past Tents Press (1985–2000), a small press supporting local poets. From 2000 to 2010, she founded, published, and edited mark(s) zine, furthering her connection to the arts.
Between 2002 and 2010, King explored net.art, exhibiting internationally at events such as the Chiangmai First New Media Art Festival (Thailand), the Werkleitz Biennale (Germany), and Espai d’Art Contemporani de Castellón (Spain), while showcasing locally at Zeitgeist Gallery, Marygrove College, Detroit Contemporary, and Alley Culture.
In 2011, King transitioned to ceramics, studying at Pewabic Pottery and earning a technical certification from Oakland Community College. She continues to refine her craft through workshops, selling her work to private clients and at festivals. Now based in Ferndale, MI, King works from her home studio, driven by a lifelong passion for creating and sharing art.
“The vessel is central to my practice, reflecting its cultural significance. My series Otherness explores “otherness” through collapsed porcelain forms, blending sensuous interiors with polished exteriors adorned with Egyptian paste. B(a)roquen reimagines classic vessels with cracks and fragments, meditating on erosion and regeneration. Both series examine how we interact with the world, our responsibilities, and the interconnectedness of life.”

“Colorful plastic debris, shiny metal shards, flashy broken toys, rusty used hand tools, discarded consumer goods, and crumpled product containers. These objects embody tensions and conflicts between humanity and nature. My art practice explores the acts and remnants of human intrusions upon the earth. Working with found materials, I create artwork depicting visual aspects of climate change.”
