April Anue – What Color is Love: Lil Boy Blue

What Color is Love: Lil Boy Blue, fabric, 39″ x 42″

Nina Simone said, “An artist’s work should reflect the times in which they live.” I made this piece in response to the cries of black children forced to leave their schools because of the way in which they wear their hair. The children are told their hair in its natural state is unacceptable, unruly, causes a distraction, and needs to be tamed. These children are given an ultimatum: cut/change their hair and assimilate or they couldn’t attend school. One child was told he wouldn’t be allowed to graduate. Another teenage boy was forced to cut off his locs, or forfeit his wrestling match.
