Interested in Curating an Exhibition?

DAM welcomes exhibition proposals from local artists, educators, and community members to curate innovative, high-quality shows that reflect Detroit’s art scene. We encourage proposals across all media, and themes, whether you’re exploring emerging ideas, uplifting underrepresented voices, or spotlighting established artistic practices in the city.

By submitting a proposal, you’ll have the opportunity to bring your curatorial vision to life in collaboration with a gallery committed to supporting artists and fostering meaningful connections within our community.

Art By & For the Community

DAM produces eight exhibitions each year. Exhibition proposals are reviewed by the DAM team in collaboration with our Exhibition Advisory Committee, a diverse group of local artists, curators, educators, and arts professionals. DAM intentionally chooses to not rely on a single staff member or curator. This collective approach ensures that our curatorial perspective remains inclusive, innovative, and community-driven, rather than relying on a singular voice.

What types of proposals does DAM accept?

Artist-Organized Exhibitions

Artist-organized exhibitions are proposed and coordinated by a group or collective of artists who wish to exhibit together under a shared theme or concept.

Key Details:

  • Must include 4–12 participating artists, with all artists represented equally.
  • Designate one or two artists as exhibition organizers responsible for coordination, communication, curatorial direction, artwork selection, curatorial text, and managing deadlines.
  • Collaborative or thematic proposals are encouraged—especially those that foster dialogue or highlight connections among participating artists.

Ideal For:
Artist collectives, peer groups, or collaborative projects looking to showcase shared ideas or explore a unifying theme.

Curator-Led Exhibitions

Curator-led exhibitions are organized by an individual or team who conceptualize and produce an exhibition featuring the work of other artists.

Key Details:

  • The curator is not an exhibiting artist in the show.
  • Curators are responsible for developing the exhibition concept, selecting artists, coordinating artworks, writing curatorial text, and working with DAM staff on production.
  • Curators are expected to maintain clear communication with artists and DAM throughout the process.
  • Proposals that introduce new perspectives or bring together a multifaceted group of artists are especially encouraged.

Ideal For:
Independent curators, educators, or arts professionals interested in bringing new ideas and artist networks to the DAM community.

FAQ

How are exhibitions selected?
All proposals are reviewed by the DAM team and the Exhibition Advisory Committee. Selections are based on artistic quality, originality, community relevance, and feasibility within DAM’s space and mission.
What kinds of exhibitions does DAM prioritize?
DAM seeks exhibitions that reflect the diversity, creativity, and innovation of the Detroit art community. We encourage proposals that explore contemporary themes, highlight underrepresented voices, or foster meaningful dialogue through art.
Do I need prior curatorial experience?
No. DAM welcomes proposals from both emerging and experienced curators and organizers. If selected, DAM staff will guide you through the exhibition planning and production process.
Does all artwork need to be for sale?
Yes. As part of our mission to create meaningful sales opportunities for working artists, we require all artwork to be for sale or include a clear sales component. Artwork may be priced up to a maximum of $5,000.
Are there costs involved in curating an exhibition?
DAM covers exhibition production costs, including installation, marketing, and opening reception expenses. Curators and organizers are responsible for any unique production needs not covered by DAM’s standard budget.
Can exhibitions include artists from outside of Michigan?
DAM’s primary focus is on local artists. Proposals that include national or international artists may be considered if the project strongly connects to the Detroit art community.
What support does DAM provide to curators and organizers?
DAM staff work closely with curators and organizers on scheduling, logistics, and marketing. Curators and organizers will be provided clear deliverables and timeline for their exhibition.
Can my proposal include performance, video, or installation-based work?
Yes. DAM supports all forms of contemporary art. If your exhibition includes complex installations, performances, or media-based work, please describe in your proposal.
When will I hear back after submitting my proposal?
DAM’s exhibition calendar is planned 1–2 years in advance, and proposals are accepted on a rolling basis. Depending on when you submit, it may take several months for your proposal to be reviewed and considered. Selected exhibitions are generally scheduled for a future season, and DAM will keep all proposals on file for future opportunities.
